After four decades in America, I made a decision that felt almost unthinkable: I returned to Northern Ireland. What I didn’t expect was how quickly that place would begin to reclaim me.

​

Returning has not been a simple homecoming—it has been a reckoning. The streets, the voices, the unspoken rules of the past—they were all still there. And so was the version of me I thought I had left behind. In a place where identity once felt fixed and choices limited, a question began to surface: Was the life—and the woman—I had built in America real, or was it only possible because I had left?

 

A Larger Life moves between past and present, tracing my journey from a working-class childhood in Belfast, shaped by constraint and smallness, to the lure of America—a place of possibility, openness, and permission. In America, I built my life from the ground up. At thirty-two, I began university, found my voice, and created a life defined not by where I came from, but by choice.

Now, decades later, I must test whether that transformation can hold in the very place that once defined me. It demands a different kind of courage—not to leave, but to stay without shrinking.
